I. Current Status and Needs of Power Distribution Room Safety Management

The power distribution room is a crucial component of the power system, housing various high-voltage distribution equipment for controlling and distributing electrical energy. To ensure its safe operation, dedicated electricians are required for 24/7 duty, closely monitoring the parameters of various instruments.

This reliance on manpower can lead to resource strain and increased supervision difficulty, posing potential risks to power supply security. Furthermore, relying solely on manual supervision may not accurately assess equipment status, making it difficult to promptly identify and resolve issues. To address these challenges in current power safety management, West Intelligence proposes an IoT-based solution for power distribution room safety management.

II. IoT Solution for Power Distribution Room Management

To address potential issues in the daily maintenance and operation of high and low voltage distribution rooms, West Intelligence proposes a comprehensive safety management solution. This solution leverages wireless communication technologies such as ZigBee (LoRa) and 4G to network sensor and camera data via wireless connectivity.

The complete solution includes West Intelligence's smart gateways, various switch/analog devices, and sensor equipment required for power management. It specifically consists of the following three parts:

  • Monitoring cameras, anti-theft alarms, and smart access control systems for the room itself;
  • Data related to indoor fire safety, including temperature & humidity sensors, indoor dust detection, transformer temperature monitoring, partial discharge detection in switchgear, water leak detectors, SF6 leakage detection, etc.;
  • Sensors inside cabinets such as current/voltage sensors, power sensors, electricity meters, fault arc sensors, and surge protection sensors.

After these detection devices collect relevant electrical data in real-time, they upload it to servers and cloud platforms via West Intelligence gateways.

Following data processing and comprehensive diagnostic analysis by the platform, potential electrical fire hazards such as leakage, overload, short circuits, three-phase imbalance, overvoltage, poor contact, and abnormal temperature rise can be promptly identified. Through terminals like computers, smartphones, and tablets, precise management and control of one or multiple distribution room devices can be achieved, enabling transparent monitoring and management of electrical fire risks.

III. Composition of the IoT System for Power Distribution Room Management

The IoT system for power distribution room safety management primarily consists of four layers: Perception Layer, Transmission Layer, Application Layer, and Terminal Layer.

  • Perception Layer:
    • Includes data acquisition modules and various sensor devices such as current sensors, voltage sensors, temperature & humidity sensors, residual current detectors, pyrolysis particle detectors, fault arc detectors, etc. These devices monitor various data within the distribution room, covering surveillance, safety, and electrical parameters.
  • Transmission Layer:
    • Includes West Intelligence's Juhe Gateway devices, Zigbee (LoRa) wireless connectivity equipment, and wireless transmission networks. This layer is responsible for transmitting data from the Perception Layer to the Application Layer, enabling data transfer and connectivity.
  • Application Layer:
    • Primarily the power supply/distribution and equipment monitoring & management platform for the distribution room. This layer is responsible for monitoring, managing, and analyzing real-time data from the IoT system's Perception Layer. It enables the monitoring, management, and analysis of the distribution room.
  • Terminal Layer:
    • Refers to terminal devices such as smartphones, iPads, computers, and PCs. This layer allows for timely access to real-time operational data and fault alarm information from system devices. Users can conveniently view the operational status of the distribution room and perform corresponding operations via these terminals.

IV. Functions of the IoT System for Power Distribution Room Management

  • Intuitive Display of Equipment Data:
    • The platform clearly and intuitively displays various electrical data within the distribution room through digitalized equipment status presentation, enabling users to easily understand equipment operation status.
  • Historical Data Statistics and Analysis:
    • The platform retains historical data uploaded by each device. Through intelligent classification and data analysis, it generates graphs to analyze equipment usage status and wear level, predicting potential equipment hazards.
  • Automatic Fault Information Alarm:
    • When the platform determines a device fault in the distribution room based on uploaded data, it transmits alarm information to maintenance electricians and managers via SMS, WeChat, email, etc., facilitating timely fault resolution.
  • Automatic Power-Off Mode:
    • When a significant device fault is detected that could easily cause or has already caused a fire, the platform can remotely cut power to the problematic device area, preventing accident spread and escalation.
  • Equipment Maintenance Management:
    • Based on equipment usage, the platform can automatically adjust maintenance cycles and proactively remind customers to perform maintenance or servicing, ensuring normal equipment operation.
  • On-site Monitoring Management:
    • The platform integrates the distribution room's access control and camera surveillance, implementing a one-person-one-card system. Only qualified electromechanical team members can enter/exit for related operations and maintenance, enhancing on-site safety management.
  • User Permission Management:
    • The platform segments different roles and personnel, setting permission information for each account to distinguish between management and maintenance privileges, preventing errors caused by misoperation and ensuring system security and reliability.
  • Equipment Health Assessment:
    • By analyzing and comparing historical data uploaded by equipment, the platform can assess equipment health status, providing corresponding recommendations and preventive measures to help users promptly identify and address equipment issues.
  • Energy Consumption Monitoring and Optimization:
    • The platform can monitor equipment energy consumption in real-time and optimize based on historical data and analysis results, offering energy-saving suggestions and measures to help users reduce energy costs.
  • Remote Control and Operation:
    • The platform enables remote control and operation of devices within the distribution room, facilitating device switching, adjustment, and maintenance for users, improving work efficiency and convenience.
  • Data Security Protection:
    • The platform employs multiple security measures to protect uploaded data from tampering and leakage, ensuring data security and privacy.
  • Fault Diagnosis and Prediction:
    • Through analysis and modeling of uploaded device data, the platform can diagnose and predict faults, identifying potential failure risks in advance and taking corresponding measures for repair and prevention.
  • Operation and Maintenance Management & Planning:
    • The platform assists users in equipment operation, maintenance management, and planning, including inspections, servicing, replacements, etc., providing relevant reminders and schedules to ensure normal operation and extend equipment lifespan.
  • Data Sharing and Collaboration:
    • The platform enables device data sharing and collaboration, facilitating information exchange and cooperation between different departments and personnel, improving work efficiency and collaborative capabilities.
  • Intelligent Decision Support:
    • Through analysis and mining of device data, the platform provides intelligent decision support, assisting users in equipment management and optimization, enhancing decision accuracy and effectiveness.
