I. Project Background Overview

A well-known multinational nutritional products company's production base factory in Jiangsu is responsible for manufacturing the brand's nutritional products for global sales. Due to the numerous production process steps, massive production tasks, and a large number of production line staff, the company's operations management department faces challenges and difficulties in production process error correction, efficiency optimization, and staff attendance and on-duty management. By utilizing our company's UWB positioning data-based application development platform system, which monitors the entire production process flow and employee movement trajectories, the company's production and management efficiency have been significantly enhanced.

II. Current Management Pain Points

  • Difficult personnel management: One person holds multiple positions, and it's challenging to manage when personnel are frequently transferred from other assembly lines due to shortages in specific processes.

  • Difficult material control: Complex production processes involve full assembly line operations for internal packaging but scattered operations for external packaging.

  • Difficult production efficiency optimization: Unauthorized job switching among staff occurs, which is hard to monitor and control, negatively impacting production efficiency.

  • Lack of real-time data leads to delayed management: Production progress is not transparent, making it impossible to make timely personnel adjustments based on real-time production status.

III. UWB-Based Solution

To address the aforementioned critical issues, enhance real-time monitoring of the production process, enable timely alerts and error correction for process mistakes, and efficiently manage production staff's work efficiency during shifts to complete urgent production tasks with high quality and efficiency, the company deployed Hainan Shidian UWB positioning base stations in one of its production workshops. Corresponding positioning tags were attached to each raw material packaging box, material barrel, and production employee. By binding production task orders with UWB tag IDs on the upper-layer application platform, the entire process flow and progress of a production order can be monitored. UWB tags with e-ink screens display the current and next process steps in real-time, reminding on-site operators to prevent process errors. The logic diagram for UWB-based process monitoring is shown in Figure 1 below:

According to the area of the production line workshop, a total of 50 UWB positioning base stations were installed and deployed across the first and second-floor monitoring areas. The base station layout plan based on the CAD drawing is shown in Figure 2 below:

UWB hardware positioning base stations and tags only provide basic location data. To make this location data valuable, it is essential to combine it with production process flows and business logic for data analysis and presentation. Therefore, open UWB hardware data reporting API interfaces are particularly crucial, as they allow the client/application side to realize the value of the positioning data. The final application framework diagram for integrating UWB positioning hardware with the platform application software is shown in Figure 3 below:

IV. Upper Platform Application Showcase

1) Personnel Working Hours Statistics — Business Function: Can统计 employee on-duty hours, query attendance records, query attendance for personnel in specified areas, and generate personnel attendance statistical reports including information such as leaving post, overtime, and violations, as shown in Figure 5 below:

2) Material Flow Tracking — Business Function: Statistics on material flow for each process, recording the duration materials spend in each production process step, presented in report form. Supports exporting statistical data on material flow time for each process (in Excel format), as shown in Figure 6 below:

3) Material Visualization Monitoring — Business Function: Real-time display of material location information on a map, quick search for specified material locations, intuitive understanding of the entire material flow process and production line efficiency analysis data, as shown in Figure 7 below:

For this renowned nutritional products company, establishing a 3D visualization positioning system based on UWB positioning technology, integrated with the upper-layer WMS system, has addressed challenges such as reliance on manual production data recording, frequent production process errors, and difficult production staff management. By binding UWB-based location data with business production logic and process flows, the true value behind the data is unlocked, improving production and management efficiency, and truly achieving cost reduction and efficiency increase in enterprise operations management.
